SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE of DURHAM
(formerly "Survivor Advocacy Committee")
Educate and Advocate to Prevent Woman Abuse
Activities & Events Descriptions
Education is a key element to inspiring change in people, and in communities. While there are many online resources available, authentic speeches or presentations, interactive workshops and facilitated programs, and panel discussions or focus groups leave lasting impressions. As a result, audiences and participants are more likely to listen, learn, and develop a plan of action based on knowledge gained.
Repetition, repetition, repetition. Like the power of location, location, location in real estate, annual campaigns generate more awareness about woman abuse as a social justice issue with every participant. The more people get engaged in public demonstrations of support and encouragement in achieving gender equality and ending violence against women the better! So turn on purple lights; wear purple clothes, purple nails, purple hair: eat purple food and drink purple beverages; sport buttons, ribbons, pendants; wear high heels and walk a mile; walk "in her shoes"; attend memorials, demonstrations, events; and then share with three people and ask them to share with three people and so on, and so on.... speak up, speak out, and then post flyers, signs, repeat the message, repeat, repeat, repeat
